This paper summarizes some of the challenges to science that are posed by the search for sustainability. There are fundamental methodological challenges such as complexity, irreversibility, and uncertainty. There are also moral and procedural challenges for defining the roles of science-based knowledge and innovations e.g. for governance of risks, for sustainable ecosystem management, or for effective communication of scientific information.
